Home Improvement Projects

Posted on March 29th, 2007 in Shopping by losbrushes

We moved into our house in September 2004. When we had the house built the builder was helpful in what upgrades to purchase through them, and which ones we would be better off doing on our own (price and selection).

Nearly three years later, we are still working on these upgrades. After having the floors done in February, here is what is up on our project list for the Spring:

  • New kitchen countertops. We went with the cheap standard when we moved in, and considering we have nice upgraded countertops they really detract from the kitchen. We’ve ordered Zodiaq quartz countertops, which have the nice look of granite but are apparently more durable.
  • New kitchen appliances. Out with the white, in with the stainless steel.
  • Paint. Right now our house is pretty sterile with everything being a nice, calm tan. After much deliberation we’re going with some bold colors that will hopefully add depth to the house.
  • New bathroom light fixtures. What we have now is probably the cheapest item in our house. We’ll be moving away from exposed light bulbs to something more soothing to the eyes.
  • Landscaping. This likely won’t all happen this year, but we’ll be putting in some flower beds and a ceiling fan for the porch. More on this one next year, I think…

We’ll see how far we get before the summer, and I’ll post some before and after photos as we go.

Meet Simon

Posted on March 26th, 2007 in Pets by losbrushes

Yesterday we went to Petco to pick up some dog food, and at the front FOGAS (Friends of Gonzales Animal Shelter) had cats up for adoption. The woman hosting the event was just getting the cats out, and a cat caught my eye. I talked to the lady for a while about him and found out that:

  • He was surrendered by his owners Saturday, who decided to move and that he wasn’t going to be part of their new home.
  • He was in great health and had no behavior problems.
  • He was great with kids and other cats, and fine with dogs.

We ended up adopting him on the spot yesterday. He came to us with the name Sugar Daddy, but that won’t fly at our house so we have renamed him Simon. Some stats about Simon:

  • He was born in August 2004, making him about 2 1/2 years old.
  • He’s mostly white with a few grey tabby patches, and has a grey tabby tail.
  • He weighs 14 pounds, but is a smallish guy and likely needs to lose a little weight.
  • He has deep green eyes.
  • Despite being a little overweight, he’s on the muscular side.

We set him up in one of the guest rooms to let him get acclimated to his new home, but he really wanted to explore so we introduced him to the hounds last night. They are mostly disinterested in him, but Phoebe wants to be his friend. Everyone has gotten along well so far.

Things we have noticed about his personality:

  • He’s very friendly and mellow. He has rolled over on his back several times to have his belly rubbed, and has been lying in the middle of the floor.
  • He can open cabinets and drawers, so we are getting some child locks today.
  • He’s very curious and likes to explore.
  • He’s young enough that he still plays.
  • He likes to be held and purrs a lot.
  • He follows us around to see what we’re up to.

Photos to come once they are uploaded to my computer…

Thai Basil Chicken

Posted on March 21st, 2007 in Food & Drink by losbrushes

I’m all about cooking things on weeknights that are simple and take under 30 minutes to prepare. We made a Thai-style basil chicken dish on Monday that was awesome and only took about 15 minutes to prepare:

  • 1 lb. chicken breast, cut into cubes
  • 1 package basil leaves
  • 1 red bell pepper, coursely chopped
  • red pepper flakes
  • olive oil
  • 4-6 large garlic cloves, chopped
  • soy sauce
  • brown rice

Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in pan; sautee garlic and bell pepper. Add chicken and cook. Add red pepper flakes (to taste), basil, and 2 tablespoons of soy sauce. Let cook an additional 3-4 minutes.

Serve over brown rice. Makes 2-3 servings as a single dish.

Book Learnin’

Posted on March 19th, 2007 in Family & Friends, Books by losbrushes

While we like the same types of movies, TV shows, and music, my husband and I don’t have a lot of overlap in the books we read. Some friends of ours have come up with an interesting project that allows one to appreciate the tastes of the other: each year they read one book at the other’s request.

This is a great idea and we intend to do this one day, but not while I’m in graduate school. Instead, we have a new project: The Intellectual Devotional. Like many devotionals, this book contains 365 daily inspirations, but this one is purely intellectual in content.

Each day of the week covers a different topic:

  • Monday = History
  • Tuesday = Literature
  • Wednesday = Visual Arts
  • Thursday = Science
  • Friday = Music
  • Saturday = Philosophy
  • Sunday = Religion

I picked it up for $10 at Half Price Books. Seemed like a harmless investment on a book that normally costs around $23. Our plan is to read one each evening and discuss. Hopefully we’ll uncover some new interests and learn a little along the way.

We start tonight. Wish us luck.

Iron Cactus Downtown

Posted on March 12th, 2007 in Food & Drink, Austin by losbrushes

Despite the rain, we went to Iron Cactus Sunday night. My husband had been craving a margarita for quite some time and I really didn’t want to keep walking in the rain, so Iron Cactus seemed like a good stop.

We arrived about 7 pm and were seated immediately, being probably the only two people in the restaurant without a SXSW badge. My husband ordered that margarita he had been wanting, and I ordered a Negra Modelo (which was listed as a Negro Modelo on the menu).

I ordered the Ancho Chile Rubbed Pork Tenderloin, a very tender piece of pork that had been seared so that the rub is basically burned onto the meat. It was presented sliced into five pieces with a chipotle demi glaze sauce, which did have a smoky flavor but lacked the kick of most chipotle sauces. The tenderloin was served with a heaping side of mashed potatoes, which were lightly mashed with skins and green onions. They did not appear to be too heavily loaded with butter or cream, making them courser and more flavorful than most mashed potatoes. The plate also came with sauteed zucchini, squash, and broccoli, which were very lightly cooked and retained most of their crispiness.

The food arrived within 10 minutes and was all very good. The wait staff was friendly and polite, and also very knowledgeable of the menu. I don’t know how busy Iron Cactus is on a weekend, but recommended for a weeknight.

Mardi Gras

Posted on March 7th, 2007 in Food & Drink, Austin, Family & Friends by losbrushes

My birthday celebration continued into yesterday. I received a phone call from the front desk to come pick up a package. Inside that package was several dozen warm cookies, a pint of ice cream, and a couple of cartons of milk, courtesy of some of my girlfriends. A gift from their office to mine.

The cookies came from an interesting little company called Tiff’s Treats, a cookie delivery service serving Austin and Dallas. A very nice touch was that the cookies were warm when they arrived. We enjoyed very moist, very rich white chocolate chip and almond, peanut butter, and oatmeal raisin cookies all afternoon.

I believe I had six cookies in total yesterday. For the rest of the week I’ll be restricting myself of green tea, water, and some nice salads.
